THE QUOTABLE QUOTE OF THE DAY
Frequently described as Oliver Twist meets Ocean’s Eleven, The Lies Of Locke Lamora is the critically acclaimed first book of the Gentleman Bastard series by Scott Lynch. It’s an inventive heist tale that combines exemplary world building with strong characterisation and intricate plotting. It’s well worth a read if you can look past the fact that all the protagonists are unrepentant criminal scumbags.
To date, The Lies Of Locke Lamora has spawned two sequel novels, and the long overdue fourth book of the series is finally expected to be published later this year. Below is a quote illustrating what I mean about the characters found within the pages of Lynch’s impressive debut.
“We’re a different sort of thief here, Lamora. Deception and misdirection are our tools. We don’t believe in hard work when a false face and a good line of bullshit can do so much more.”
The Lies Of Locke Lamora
It’s fair to say I have a strained relationship with The Lies Of Locke Lamora. I like it and dislike it in equal measure. All the things I enjoyed in the story are balanced out by all those things I didn’t enjoy. Keep your eyes peeled for my review of the book (to be posted later this month) to find out which aspects of the tale pushed my buttons the wrong way.
