THE QUOTABLE QUOTE OF THE DAY
Prophecies are a common trope of fantasy fiction, and this particular gem, from Brilliance Of The Moon, the third book of the Tales Of The Otori series, is a fabulous example of such. It’s a wonderfully written, poetic prophecy, as befitting of a writer as accomplished as Lian Hearn (pen name of the British born children’s author, Gillian Rubinstein).
I can’t think of another prophecy from any other book that is quite as memorable as this one. If you happen to know of one as good as this, please let me know in the comments.
“Your lands will stretch from sea to sea. But peace comes at the price of bloodshed. Five battles will bring you peace, four to win and one to lose. Many must die, but you yourself are safe from death, except at the hands of your own son.”
Brilliance Of The Moon
For those of you unfamiliar with the author and her writing, I would certainly recommend this series if you are looking for an historical fantasy series with a setting based on feudal Japan. All the titles are available in hardcover, paperback, ebook, and audio book editions from the usual outlets.
That is an ominous prophecy. And now I want to read the trilogy just to see how it ultimately plays out.
